Housing Cost Burden

Data used to determine housing cost burden is comes from the U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey 5-year estimates microdata, collected from IPUMS. Housing cost burden looks at the share of total household income that is dedicated toward housing costs each month. In this context, housing considers not only costs directly related toward housing (such as mortgage and rent), but also additional costs associated with housing (such as utilities, fuel and insurance).

A household is defined as housing cost burdened if they dedicate at least 30 percent of their household income toward housing, while a household is considered severely housing cost burdened if they dedicate at least 50 percent of their household income toward housing.

In 2022, 36.1 percent of total households in Collier County were considered housing cost burdened, with 18.9 percent considered severely housing cost burdened. A larger share of renter-occupied households were housing cost burdened (57.9 percent) compared to owner-occupied households (28.9 percent).
